I stood in the kitchen, surrounded by my wife and daughter, when a small birthday cake was placed in front of me. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of melancholy as I thought about my sister Angie, who had passed away the year before around this time. But then I looked at my daughter, Alenna, who was smiling up at me with her big brown eyes, and I felt a glimmer of joy in my heart. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes as I made a wish, blowing out the candles on the cake. We took a bite, and as the sweet flavor hit my tongue, I felt a wave of gratitude wash over me. Despite the pain of losing my sister, I was still here, alive and surrounded by the people I loved. I had a beautiful daughter, a wife who had stood by me through thick and thin, and the promise of a future filled with endless possibilities. The overwhelming feeling of joy was a complete 180 from the year before, where I had drowned my sorrows in alcohol and self-pity. As the night wore on and the drinks flowed, I found myself breaking down in tears as I thought about my sister. But even in those moments of pain, I held onto the love that surrounded me, the support of my family and friends who had helped me through the darkest of times. The night came to a close, and as I stumbled into bed, I felt a sense of peace. I was alive, I was loved, and I had the strength to keep going. My birthday would never be the same without my sister, but I had something precious – the love of my family, and the promise of a brighter future ahead.
