The sun was high in the sky as I pulled up to my brother’s house, the familiar brick facade welcoming me like an old friend. I could still feel the weight of my father’s absence lingering in the air, but there was an undeniable sense of comfort in the familiarity of the place. I stepped out of the cab and made my way to the backyard, where the sweet smell of charcoal and grilled meat teased my senses. It had been a few months since my dad’s death, but his presence was still palpable as if he were watching over us from a place we couldn’t see. As I approached the BBQ, my brother was expertly flipping hamburgers and hot dogs, the sizzle and pop of the grill creating a soundtrack to our day. We exchanged a glance and a nod, acknowledging the bittersweet nature of the gathering. We set up a couple of lawn chairs on the concrete and cracked open some ice-cold Heinekens, the condensation dripping down the sides of the bottles like a refreshing oasis in the sweltering heat. We sat there for a while, sipping our beers and reminiscing about the good times with our dad. Our gaze would occasionally drift toward the basement door, the entrance to what was once his sanctuary. It was now a sobering reminder that he was no longer with us. The door stood slightly ajar as if inviting us to descend the staircase and explore the memories that lay dormant within. But we resisted the urge, focusing instead on the task at hand – creating something that would honor his memory and build a legacy of our own. The idea of starting an entertainment company had been floating around in my head for a while, but it wasn’t until that moment, surrounded by the ghosts of our past, that I felt compelled to take the leap. My brother and I excitedly tossed around ideas, each one grander than the last. “It’ll be a record label, but so much more, too,” I enthused, the possibilities seeming endless. As my brother continued to tend to the BBQ, I pulled out my phone and decided to make it official. I navigated to the website to register our new LLC, my heart pounding with anticipation. With a few taps on the screen, Global Domination Productions LLC was born, and a wave of determination washed over me. I looked up at my brother, his face mirroring my own mix of excitement and resolve. We spent the rest of the day discussing our plans for the company, the warm glow of the setting sun casting a golden hue over the yard. The basement door stood sentinel, a bittersweet reminder of the past, but also a testament to the strength and perseverance that our father had instilled in us. As we raised our beers in a toast to our new venture, I couldn’t help but feel that he was smiling down on us, proud of the men we had become and the legacy we were about to create.
